This time, they returned with their son Toby (the baby from Labyrinth!) as design supervisor – following in his family’s footsteps. #Gelfling dark crystal seriesBrian Froud, conceptual designer of The Dark Crystal, and his wife Wendy, who sculpted and created the Gelflings, both joined the team behind the new series to work on creature and costume design. Lisa Henson, who is CEO of the Jim Henson Company, is not the only familiar face working on the project. The Gelflings in the new series look amazing! The puppet designs were finalised in early 2017 and even though their controls are far more technologically advanced than they were for the original, the show still took around two and a half years to reach screens. There are also Podlings, urRu and a Fizzgig along for the ride. It was a seriously complicated productionĭue to the complex technical nature of producing a show with an entirely puppet cast, ten episodes took a whole year to film! As well as the Gelfling trio of Rian, Deet and Brea, there are the evil Skeksis, who are motivated by power and their desire for eternal life. “What was that culture? What was lost? What was that beautiful Gelfling civilisation?” “That was our jumping-off point for the whole series,” she says. The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance, which takes place several years before the Gelflings’ demise, follows three Gelflings on a quest to prevent a sickness called the Darkening from creeping into Thra, bringing them into conflict with their cruel rulers, the Skeksis.Īccording to Henson’s daughter Lisa, an executive producer on The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance, the idea for the new series came from a scene in the original, where the ruins of the former Gelfling community are revealed at the Wall of Destiny. And if Jen and Kira contain the genetic makeup of 4 clans, those clans will eventually reappear in the population, as individuals crossbreed. In the 1982 movie, Jen, a Gelfling raised by the urRu after the tragic demise of his race, must find the missing piece of the Dark Crystal to restore order and balance to his home. Jen and Kira's great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, etc, will be further and further apart, as they will be 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th cousins, until they are virtual strangers, at which point the genetics will be safe. A single generation will not cause serious problems. We know from our own history that mutations from inbreeding only occur in families that have been inbreeding for multiple generations, such as European royal families or hillbillies. Even if mutations occurred, they would only affect 25% of their grandchildren. There would only be necessary inbreeding for a single generation, their grandchildren. Secondly, their children would be normal. So potentially Jen and Kira may already come to the table with sufficient genetic diversity. Kira seems to be Vapran, likely borne of one of the princesses (Brea?), but her father is unknown, although Kylan (a Spriton) seems to show interest in her. I retain that Rian, a Stonewood, is Jen's father, but Rian's likely future mate is Deet, a Grottan. Firstly, it has been theorized from AoR that Jen and Kira may not be "purebred". I think we need to understand a little about what inbreeding does and doesn't do. I think they did all come from Jen and Kira. ![]()
